The Sessions

Morning Keynote 9:05 - 10:15

‍ We begin our morning with some presentations from local service providers on how they attempt to create safer spaces in their contexts. The discussion will then be turned over to our members at tables to consider how they might influence safety in school environments, along with Q & A for the panel.

Full-Day Session: GuysWork Training-in-Brief 10:45 - 3:00

‍ ‍Join seasoned trainer and facilitator Mike Hudson to learn all about the GuysWork program, how lessons are run, and the benefits to students in understanding identity, help-seeking, and a variety of social issues.

Workshops 10:45 - 11:45, 1:00 - 2:00, 2:00 - 3:00

  1. Gender-Based Violence and the Trans Perspective—A queer middle school student and a queer teacher discuss navigating the school system and the unique situations they encounter in interactions with students, colleagues and parents from microaggressions to more direct discrimination and/or violence. Knowing how to support trans students will lead to better support of all students!

  2. A Practical Look at Gender Justice in the Classroom—This collaborative and interactive workshop will begin with a high-level presentation of research findings on education leadership for gender justice. It will then share and test new materials designed to support educators to engage in gender justice advocacy in schools, in and outside of the classroom. Gender justice encompasses countering all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination and deepening gender equity and inclusion for students and staff of all gender identities.

  3. Book Club—Beartown—Join with other educators to break down one title from the province’s GBV curricular list. This session is sure to provide some teaching ideas as well as spark discussion on how to handle issues it might raise. Participants will have read the book in advance; led by a NSATEE executive member.

  4. Community Room—The theme of this conference can be a heavy one, so consider spending time in conversation with colleagues about safer spaces, curricular topics, or teaching approaches for this material. Facilitated by a member of our executive (this is in addition to a low-sensory space available at any time).

  5. Community Supports Pavilion—Meet more intimately with representatives from a variety of local organizations that support children, women and families who have been affected by violence. Each representative will have their own space to facilitate discussion and Q & A.
